Where Are the Village Companies ?
Village Companies have been set up in the Meden Valley, the former coalfield area of North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire, an area that has been hit hard by the closure of the traditional colliery and the textile industries.
The Meden Valley is made up of 35 villages and towns with a population of 81,000 but between 800 - 1000 young adults move away each year. There are around 3,600 houses unfit to live in and a further 10,300 in need of major repair.
Between 1984 and 2002 20,000 jobs have been lost due to the closure of both the collieries and the textile industry.
A Village Company has its aims and objectives to provide a focus for economic and community regeneration, to relieve unemployment and improve local services and amenities.
